Crystal Rapid from the high scout. Crystal is one of the two most famous rapids in Grand Canyon, though a good run is quick and uneventful. Bad runs can be anywhere from a little more exciting to downright terrifying. During the high flows of 1983 Crystal transformed into a monster that could, and did, thoroughly dismantle motor rigs and oar boats alike that went into its deep, dark hole of despair.

Foot well of the Ross Wheeler, a steel rowboat left on river left by Charles Russel way back in 1914. The boat was constructed by Bert Loper, the Grand Old Man of the Colorado. These days the Wheeler is chained to rocks on river left at the foot of the South Bass Trail.
